This book records the lectures of six eminent biographers given in the winter of 1985 at the New York Public Library, wherein they discuss their fascination with their subjects, offer insights into their lives, and elucidate a bit of the process that goes into the production of biographical works.
The opening essay, David McCullough talking about his research into Harry Truman, is probably a contender for the best piece in the book.
