GOVERNOR-General Sir Michael Ogio passed away at the State residence, Government House, at Konedobu last Saturday afternoon.
Sir Michael, 75, is the second Governor-General to die in office – the first was Sir Ignatius Kilage in 1989.
The former politician-cum-vice regal was only a week shy of ending his term as the ninth Governor-General and eight days away from the official handover-takeover with his successor Bob Dadae.
Sir Michael had been ill for some time, medevaced overseas on several occasions for medical treatment and was last admitted at Pacific International Hospital at Three-Mile and at the end of last week was taken back to Government House where he died about 3.45pm on Saturday.
The Government House immediately issued an official statement announcing the death and advising of arrangements.
Sir Michael Ogio was born on July 7, 1942, in his Tinputz village, North Bougainville, in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
